Gaodang Village is located in the southwestern part of Zhenning Buyi and Miao Autonomous County, Anshun City, Guizhou Province. It is an ancient Buyi village with a history of nearly a thousand years. The village is named “Gaodang” in the Buyi language, meaning “high and vast”, because it is situated among lofty mountains and resembles a pot supported by peaks. Gaodang Village is one of the few well-preserved ancient Buyi villages in Guizhou Province. Its architecture is mainly made of stone, forming a unique Buyi-style stone house with a dry-column structure. There are a total of 151 well-preserved ancient houses in the village, comprising 423 rooms, covering an area of 22,000 square meters. These houses, built with wooden frames, stone slabs, and stone walls, are one of the best-preserved Buyi villages in the country.

The natural environment of Gaodang Village is extremely beautiful, with a cool climate and distinct four seasons. Surrounded by mountains on all sides, the village is nestled on the hillside, with two watercourses to the north, hence the name “Gaodang” which means “high and vast” due to its high mountains and water levels. It is not only a model for the preservation and inheritance of traditional Buyi residential architecture and farming civilization but also a symbol of the cultural diversity of ethnic minority regions in Guizhou.

In recent years, Gaodang Village has attracted numerous tourists and artists to visit and create with its unique natural landscapes and rich cultural resources. In 2013, to address poverty in Gaodang Village, Anshun City proposed poverty alleviation through tourism development. The local government actively developed the characteristic village of “Millennium Buyi Ancient Village”, which led to the initial development of tourism in Gaodang Village. Today, Gaodang Village has been awarded national titles such as 4A-level scenic spot, National Key Village for Rural Tourism, and Chinese Traditional Village.
