The Pingtang Bridge of Pingtang-Luodian Expressway, located over the Chaodu River Grand Canyon between Yazhou Town and Tongzhou Town in Pingtang County of Qiannan Autonomous Prefecture, is the largest three-tower cable-stayed bridge in China’s mountainous areas. The bridge features beautifully designed space diamond-shaped towers, earning it the nickname “Bridge of the Sky”.

The bridge’s towers are made of reinforced concrete hollow thin-wall structures. The Pingtang side tower is 320 meters high, the Luodian side tower is 298 meters tall, and the central tower reaches 332 meters, equivalent to about 110 stories, making it the world’s tallest reinforced concrete bridge tower. The bridge’s construction involved a pioneering technique in China, using steel beams in whole segment lateral moving and rotation for assembly.

The bridge connects the east and west sides. By the end of 2019, after the completion and opening of the Pingtang Grand Bridge, the travel time between Pingtang and Luodian was reduced from two and a half hours to just one hour. The nearby “Bridge of the Sky” service area’s viewing platform attracts a continuous stream of tourists taking photos with this powerful and aesthetically pleasing bridge.

Today, this engineering project, which has won three major awards including the Gustav Lindenthal Medal at the International Bridge Conference, the FIDIC Engineering Project Award from the International Federation of Consulting Engineers, and the Outstanding Infrastructure Award from the International Bridge and Structural Engineering Association, stands proudly amidst the mountains. It provides a major thoroughfare for the local people to venture out of the mountains and supports the socio-economic development of the region.
