Leaving the urban area of Anshun and taking the Shanghai-Kunming Expressway towards Guanling for over 50 kilometers, you’ll be greeted by the awe-inspiring Baling River Bridge just past the tunnel.

Located within Guanling Autonomous County, the Baling River Bridge is a steel truss suspension bridge with a main span of 1088 meters. The bridge is 2237 meters long, and its deck stands 370 meters above the water surface. It is the world’s first kilometer-span bridge in a mountainous area spanning a gorge and the only super bridge in the province where visitors can enter and tour the interior. Upon completion, the bridge reduced the travel time between the two sides from an hour to just 4 minutes, effectively opening the “Governor Vessels” of Guanling’s economic development and turning the dream of “bridging east and west, turning a natural moat into a thoroughfare” into reality.

Construction of the Baling River Bridge began on April 18, 2005, and the main bridge was completed on May 18, 2009, achieving full connectivity. It opened to traffic on December 23 of the same year, marking Guanling’s official integration into the “high-speed network” and bringing about revolutionary changes in local transportation.

The year 2009 was a watershed moment for Guanling’s transportation development. With the opening of the Shanghai-Kunming Expressway and the Baling River Bridge, the travel time from Guanling to the Huangguoshu Scenic Area was reduced from over 40 minutes to 15 minutes, to Anshun from over 2 hours to 50 minutes, and to Guiyang to just 80 minutes.
