Zheng’an, in Zunyi City, Guizhou Province, was considered at state-level a poverty stricken county, but now it has become the largest guitar manufacturing base in China. Behind this, lies a “poverty elimination legend” which was forged in only a few years.

1.Little Guitars Help Alleviate Poverty
Zheng’an had always been a major exporter of labor services in Guizhou. Since the 1980s, over 200,000 people had left Zheng’an and headed to coastal cities for work. After years of tracking and investigating, in 2013, the authorities of Zheng’an managed to build a database of Zheng’an talents that were working outside the county. They found that Zheng’an technicians working in Guangzhou’s guitar manufacturing industry amounted to as many as 56,000, of whom quite a few have become senior technicians. It is precisely these facts that have led Zheng’an authorities to a new approach for poverty elimination. The Zheng’an authorities began to send special working teams to Guangzhou and Shenzhen, to encourage those technicians to return home to Zheng’an to start a business there. Just so, Zheng’an started from zero and began to develop the guitar manufacturing industry aggressively. After that, it took Zheng’an only a few years to be lifted out of the category of poor counties.

2.The Internet Helps Zheng’an Guitars Go Global
During the Big Data Industry Expo held in Guizhou in 2018, Jack Ma said that “I was told that they sell ukulele somewhere near Zunyi, which is a kind of little guitar that is very popular in the United States. Presently they sell as many as 1,500 ukuleles everyday online”. The company mentioned by Jack Ma is Baikal Musical Instrument Manufacturing Co. Ltd, which was founded in July 2017 and now sells more than 2,000 guitars on average per day. The owner of the company, Zhao Shan, had ten years’ working experience in the Internet industry, so he developed the online selling strategy at the very beginning of this business. The company is also the only one that completely depends on online selling in the whole of Zheng’an Guitar Park. During the Double Eleven Shopping Festival (November 11th, the Chinese version of Black Friday) in 2018, Baikal Guitar was ranked second in online sales with a total of 18,082 paid orders.

Poverty Alleviation in Tuanjie Village

Poverty Alleviation in Tuanjie Village Tuanjie (Unity) Village, in Pingzheng Gelao Township, Zunyi City, Guizhou Province, was once an impoverished village. There is a doggerel going in the locality: “High mountains with rocky roads, uphill battle out the door; corn is usually a daily treat, while rice soup is a New Year feast”.
In the 1960s, the Party Secretary of the village, led the villagers to build a water channel on the cliff, with the main canal measuring 7.2 kilometers and the branch canal measuring 2.2 kilometers.
The project has enabled the whole village to grow more rice. This “channel of life” that coils along the mountains has already become the most magnificent attraction in the locality. In recent years, the poverty alleviation team of Zhongtian Financial Group has settled in Tuanjie Village, helping the villagers to turn “the channel of life” into “the golden channel of fortune”. The present Tuanjie Village, with both mountain and water resources, gives a sense of nostalgia and attracts at least three or four hundred tourists every day.
