Guizhou Poverty Alleviation Representative: Hezhang County

Hezhang County, located in the hinterland of Wumeng Mountains in Bijie City, Guizhou Province, has a forest coverage rate of 53.29%. The biological resources here are diverse, and Hezhang is honored as the “land of walnuts” and the “land of cherries” in China. The picturesque Hou River, part of Wu River system, flows through Hezhang county. The cross-river highway bridge seems to disappear into the clouds, as it connects Hezhang County with the outside world. (Photo: China National Geographic)

Guizhou Poverty Alleviation Representative: Haique Village

The Haique Village in Hezhang County is located in the particularly impoverished areas centrally distributed in Wumeng Mountains, with a high presence of Yi and Miao ethnic groups. It was the battlefield where Zhuge Liang, the famous strategist in ancient China, staged the “Seven Captures of Meng Huo (a rebel leader)”, and was just one mountain away from the ruins of the mysterious ancient state of Yelang. After more than 30 years, the per capita annual net income of Haique Village has increased from 33 yuan in 1985 to 10,611 yuan in 2018. Since then, the whole village was lifted out of poverty and it has bid farewell to absolute poverty that lasted for thousands of years.

Distinctive Town: Shexiang Town

The ancient town of Shexiang is the targeted poverty alleviation project carried out by Evergrande Group in favor of Dafang County of Guizhou Province. The town has the one and only urban flower terraced fields in the country — Guyi terraced fields, and the quaint-looking commercial street which integrate all the services of “sightseeing, tourism, experience, entertainment, catering and shopping” while keeping the ancient customs of the Yi people. At the end of 2018, it was rated as a national AAAA-level tourist attraction. The picture below shows a view of Shexiang ancient town filmed by photographer, Wang Chunliang.

Beautiful Village: Langtang

Langtang Village is in Jiuzhou Town, Xixiu District, Anshun City, Guizhou Province.
In 2016, Langtang Village was selected as one of “China’s Most Beautiful Leisure Village” for its characteristic folk houses. The sky here is blue, the ground is green, the water is crystal clear, and together with the sloping roof, the flagstone walkway, the lime-washed walls… it would make you feel as if walking into an idyllic picture, as the poem says “while picking asters beneath the eastern fence, my gaze upon the southern mountain rests”. It looks just like a paradise!

Anshun, Guizhou: Zhenning Stone Village

Zhenning Autonomous County is located in Anshun City, which is not far from the Huangguoshu Waterfall Scenic Spot. There is a village, where almost all buildings are made of stone and slate, hence the name “stone village”. Once through the village entrance, you would feel like walking into a world of stone: the streets are stone-paved, the houses are stone-based, and the roof is slate-covered.

Gaodang Village: A Hundred-Year-Old Village of Buyi Ethnic Group

Also located in Zhenning Autonomous County of Anshun City, is a well-preserved Buyi village – Gaodang Village. The village was built in the Ming dynasty and gradually grew in size during the Qing Dynasty. It has a history of more than 600 years and is known as the “Museum of Stone Buildings”.

Poverty Alleviation in Guizhou: Duck Egg Brother

Yang Xingqiao, a Miao villager living in Chengjiang Village, Xingren Town, Danzhai County, Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture in Guizhou Province, is locally known as “duck egg brother”.
In recent years, the local government has provided free ducks, technical support and assured buy-back for poor households that are willing to engage in the breeding of ducks, and Yang Xingqiao is one of the beneficiaries. Today, more than 300 ducks that Yang is raising on his farm produce nearly 100,000 eggs every year. Yang’s duck eggs are so popular at the market that they have established some sort of brand. The “Women Army” that Guards the Substations

In Wuchuan Gelao and Miao Autonomous County, Zunyi City, Guizhou Province, there is a “women army” composed of 21 women– the women work in the maintenance and operation teams at the transformer substation of Wuchuan Power Supply Bureau of Guizhou Power Grid Company. They are in charge of the inspection and operation of the equipment at the 15 substations under their jurisdiction. Since 2011, this women-team has achieved a 100% inspection rate, over 10,000 times of accurate and safe operation, zero safety violation and zero operational errors, effectively ensuring the safe operation of the power equipment.

Aerial Photography: Autumn Parching in the Mountains of Qiandongnan

During the golden autumn season, farmers in Qiandongnan, Guizhou, are busy sunbaking and drying their newly harvested rice in the fine weather. A bird’s eye view would show a busy scene of autumn “parching” throughout all the villages.
What is “autumn parching” (shaiqiu)? This word has a strong local character. Due to the scarcity of flat lands in the mountainous areas of Guizhou, villagers dry the newly-harvested crops in the small yards behind the house, or on the window sills, rooftops, etc. As time passes, it has become a unique custom.

A Different Road to Wealth: The Seven Fairies in a Dong Village

Gaibao Village, in Liping County, Guizhou Province, is a beautiful and isolated village. In February 2018, a new secretary in charge of poverty alleviation came to the village. Wu Yusheng, in his thirties, convened seven girls living in the village to form a group called “seven romantic Dong fairies”. They record short videos to promote Gaibao Village, and sell agricultural products and handicrafts of the Dong ethinic group through live broadcast. In just two years, the “Seven Fairies” have gained up to 1,600,000 fans.
