Shiqian Puppet Show is a traditional local theater from Shiqian County, Guizhou Province. On May 20, 2006, it was approved by the State Council of the People’s Republic of China and included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage lists.

Shiqian Puppet Show is a folk puppet theater genre that has been passed down among various ethnic groups in Shiqian County, Guizhou Province. At its peak, its performances extended throughout the county and even to the surrounding border areas of Hunan, Hubei, Chongqing, and Guizhou provinces. The origins of Shiqian Puppet Show can be traced back to the “carved wooden figures” or “puppets” from the Han and Wei dynasties, and it is a legacy of the rod puppets from the Song and Yuan dynasties.

According to oral history, the Shiqian Puppet Show was introduced from Chenxi, Hunan, about 200 years ago. By the early 21st century, it had been passed down through seven generations. The artistry of the Shiqian Puppet Show is exceptionally exquisite and awe-inspiring. In addition to the brilliant performances by the puppeteers, the perfect puppet design and operating equipment are also significant attractions for the audience.
