This is Maliao Village, Leishan County, southwest China’s Guizhou Province. In the surrounding villages which are reputed as Silver Delta by the locals, there is a population of over 3,200 residents, about 440 of whom make a living by making Miao silver jewelry.

In the past, for a lack of transportation, it is difficult for those craftsmen to sell their silver-made products to the outside. So they have no choice but to go to the cities to do business or to be a migrant worker, leaving behind children and the elderly. But over the past years, driven by the government’s investment, tourism picked up in the countryside.

Featuring diverse ethnic cultures, Maliao, for example, has got improved in infrastructure and accommodation. This has attracted more and more tourists to come to learn its silver jewelry-making techniques and to buy its products. An increasing number of craftsmen has returned home and revitalized the craft.
