In China, waterfalls are mostly located in the south and Guizhou is renowned as the “Province of Thousands of Waterfalls”. Mountains shape water into waterfalls which reveal the mountains’ geological features at the same time. It is mountains and waters that foster the spirit of Guizhou together. The charm of waterfalls in Guizhou does not only hinge on the Huangguoshu Waterfall but also comes from numerous waterfalls hidden in remote mountains, which are stunningly magnificent especially in the current rainy season. Let’s enjoy them together.

Huangguoshu (Yellow Fruit Tree) Waterfall

Located in Anshun City of Guizhou Province, Huangguoshu (Yellow Fruit Tree) Waterfall, famous for the enormous flow of water, is the largest waterfall in China and the third-largest one in the world. Covering a distance of 20 kilometers upstream and downstream of the river, there is a large waterfall cluster consisting of 18 waterfalls in different styles with Huangguoshu Waterfall at the core. Six viewing platforms are available for tourists to view the Waterfall from six directions—above, below, front, back, left, and right. It is also the only waterfall in the world with a naturally-formed “water curtain cave” which allows tourists to hear, view, and touch the waterfall from the inside cave to the outside.

Maling River Canyon

Located in the Xingyi City of Guizhou Province, the Maling River Canyon is honored as “the most beautiful scar on the earth”, of which the hugest fissure is over 300 meters deep. Ranging from 750 meters to 1,800 meters above sea level, it presents the beautiful and magnificent karst landscape of different strata. The most remarkable feature of the Maling River Canyon is its waterfalls. Consisting of 70 waterfalls, the Canyon is listed as the canyon with the most waterfalls in China by the Chinese National Geography. The sandy shale around the surface of the Canyon renders the waterfalls here high and straight. It is a unique “masterpiece of nature” embedded in the land of central Guizhou.

Chishui Great Waterfall

The Chishui Great Waterfall in Guizhou, or “Shizhang Cave Waterfall”, is the largest waterfall located on the Danxia landform in China, and also the largest one in the Yangtze River basin. The Chishui Great Waterfall is praised by geological experts as “another waterfall wonder in China” and “the Top Waterfall on Danxia Landform in China”. Standing before the pool under the Great Waterfall, what we see is an enormous flow of water pouring down from the Danxia cliff, with a shocking roaring sound.

Yinlianzhuitan Waterfall

The Yinlianzhuitan (means “Silver chains falling into a pool” in Chinese) Waterfall, located in the downstream area of the Huangguoshu Waterfall in Anshun, Guizhou, is a natural wonder in the Stone Forest in Water of the Tianxingqiao Scenic Area. The Waterfall is only over 10 meters high in the shape of a funnel through which flows of water fall into the deep pool like a string of silver chains. That’s where the name “Yinlianzhuitan” comes from. In Huangguoshu Waterfall Cluster, it is extraordinary neither due to the height, nor the size, but its gentle beauty and touching sound of water flow, making visitors under the illusion of falling into the Milky Way and unwilling to leave.

The Doupotang Waterfall

The Doupotang (means “Steep Slope Pool” in Chinese) Waterfall is located 1 kilometer from the upper reaches of Huangguoshu Waterfall. At its top is a huge water pool. Every time before the flood, the Waterfall rumbles like roaring. Therefore, it is also called the “Roaring Waterfall”. In fact, the Doupotang Waterfall has two “faces”. In the level period when the upstream water volume is small, the slowing Waterfall runs down delicately and gracefully. While in the rainy season when the river surges down with heavy sediment, the Doupotang Waterfall losses its gentleness in the past, roaring like a galloping wild horse, full of power and grandeur.

Dishuitan Waterfall

The majestic Dishuitan Waterfall is located 6 kilometers to the west of the Huangguoshu Waterfall in Anshun, Guizhou with a total height of 410 meters. Looking from the top of the opposite Dapoding Mountain, the Waterfall is like a goddess in white dress. On the mountain are well-arranged and picturesque villages of Buyi ethnic minority called Jiwotian (means “a farmland as small as a chicken coop” in Chinese). A waterfall cluster in multiple steps is located 2 kilometers away from the village. The beautiful farmlands, cascades, and elegant and peaceful Buyi villages contribute to an exquisite painting of idyllic scenery.

Laya Waterfall

“Laya” means “a beautiful girl” in the language of Buyi ethnic minority. The Laya Waterfall is a scenic spot in the Xiaoqikong (means “seven small arches” in Chinese) Scenic Area in Libo County, Guizhou Province. The Waterfall is 10 meters in width with a drop of 30 meters. Instead of laying on the cliff, the Waterfall is climbing in the middle of a mountain and is even more beautiful with the surrounding grass and trees. At the bottom of the Waterfall, the spraying and fluttering water mists will scour off all the summer heat and fatigue on the journey, and make you relaxed and refreshed.

Dragon Gate Waterfall

The Dragon Palace is located in Anshun, Guizhou. Its main cave looks like the palace where the “Dragon King” lives in mythology, and is honored by the Chinese National Geography as “the most beautiful karst cave in China”. Inside the Dragon Palace, there is an extraordinary and magnificent waterfall landscape named the “Dragon Gate Waterfall”, which is more than 38 meters in height and 25 meters in width. However, due to dim light inside the cave, you need to find a good angle to capture the spectacular Dragon Gate Waterfall.

Zhijin Waterfall

Zhijin County in Bijie, Guizhou, is a place famous for its karst caves, while karst caves are not the only attractions here. The Zhijin Waterfall, previously known as the “Guiguo Waterfall”, is 55 meters in height and 35 meters in width. As a remarkable example of the landscape in Zhijin, it features “grandness, uniqueness, precipitousness and elegance”, and is next only to the Huangguoshu Waterfall. As water running down intensively, what a glorious scene here.
